Y.T stands for Yours Truely...Week 14

How Shelby Rasmuson got very Anal with the literature Challenge...

I have to admit it, when I read about Teagan Blackthorn's Literature Challenge I was rubbing my hands together with glee...



Let me introduce you to Y.T a Truely memorable character from the Book Snow Crash (yes that book..) by Neal Stephenson. She's a 15 year old Valley Girl, who works for RadiKS as a Sk8R Chick delivery girl, surfing the highways and byways of the L.A. freeway in a country that is no longer the United States. She poons a lift on the bimboboxes as she travels through the burbclaves of the City till one day when she literally collides with Hiro Protagonist, geek hacker involved with the development of the Metaverse..who delivers pizza for Uncle Enzo's Cosa Nostra Pizza. Lets just say that things quickly get out of hand with Y.T. and Hiro getting caught up with events which cross the barriers of Reality, the Metaverse and weird Mesopotamic Viruses.



Y.T is never described in terms of height, weight, Hair etc. But what I was able to glean from the book is more about what she wears; RadiK Knight Visions, Mark II Smartwheels, Coverall in Dynamic Blue and Orange(which is padded for protection), with pockets and lots of doodadds, A Barcode, no helmet (as she is airbag protected) and Kourier Gloves. Finding all this stuff in the ah...Metaverse was, well interesting to say the least. I have never really been into the cyberpunk look in SL so I found myself travelling to a lot of spots trying to fit the clothes to the character.
The Board or Plank (per Y.T.) I eventually found at Simboarder World where you can buy a Skate/snowboard which does multiple tricks, flies and is paintable. This Sim has everything a Sk8R would need to get started, with clubs, practice areas and shops.

Pics were shot in The Wastelands (reminds one of Terminal Island in the book.) Simboarder world, Welsh Lakes, Creamshop and Tesla. It is important to shoot in an area that allows rezzing and scripts (Creamshop does not.)

The Good, the Bad and the BareRose-Week 13

Part2 of the Bare Rose Challenge



There probably is no other store in SL which has such a sheer variety of Clothing styles at very affordable prices. I am showing some of the other outfits I purchased as a result of Winter Jefferson's B@R challenge. This store defies labelling because although I tend to buy the crazy Fantasy Costumes, the store also offers some lovely dresses, fall outfits and coats/sweaters. There is a large array of Winter/Christmas wear as well as hair and boots.



I have to admit the fact that, although I am mostly an Elf in SL, I like to wear a lot of Black. Black fits into most shooting situations, and is easy to accessorize. It's no surprise then that I fell in love with Kaara, a beautiful Gothic Lolita Dress with feathers. There are a few color options with it, like red piping on the top and it can be mixed and matched with other costumes. The Hair was from Jolie Femme and the shorter look matched perfectly. The Pics was shot in Silent Sparrow Sim.




The Second Outfit is a Paladin Knight Costume called Mystic Lady. I wore all white but I also received Blue, Black and Brown cloaks. The boots I bought at First Flower, and I have to say that white is not the most common colour in a boot. The Hair is from ::69:: and when shooting this pic getting the hair right was difficult. The clothes did come with short black hair. I think that this outfit will go well in some of the Elvish events I sometimes attend (as well as roleplay and Costume events). The Pic was shot in Winter at Fruit Islands.

Rosebud and a Bare Rose - Week 12

In response to Winter Jefferson's Plurk/Blogger Challenge I thought I'd go all Christmassy on you and bring you a Gothic Christmas Reindeer.

I love the clothes in Bare Rose and everyone seems to have memories of arriving here during their noobish days and being blown away by the sheer size, quantity and craziness of the place. The lag is terrible (even if you have a fairly fast computer)and I remember getting a whopping headache and vowing never to return.But I had to go back last Halloween when I was just not overly impressed by the amount of Sexy Witch costumes out there. Arriving I was like a kid in a candy store, found the outfit (which I covered here) vowing to come back this time with money.So Winters challenge was Good timing! I bought a couple of really cool outfits but am showing you only one today owing to the fact that I may not get online again for a couple of days. One of my criteria for buying anything is that I must feel I will wear it again and this little number is going to be at quite a few Christmas parties!

Location, Location, Location - Week 12

I love shooting on Location, in RL and in SL. The advantage of SL is that there is a whole world at your fingertips and you don't have to get on a plane or spend a fortune to get there. Scouting out locations involves being aware of what's out there but this can be hard in a world that is constantly changing. Being aware involves exploring, saving landmarks, checking out sites like Flickr, Koinup, and SL Travel blogs.

Here are two amazing builds which show great artistry and are well worth a visit even if you are not into photography. It is always wise when shooting, to try to match the clothes, accessories and location to the flavour you are trying to express.

Cu Mara is a winter themed Sim which captures the beauty and magic of the season.

GolGothica is a RP Sim, still under construction which would appeal to anyone attracted to RP Dark Fantasy experience.
Both of these Sims embody what I love about SL, Creativity, a unique vision, and unbridled imagination!

Week 10 - Flickr, Contests and the Truth........

This week I finally did something I should have done a long while ago.

I finally started using my Flickr account. Pure laziness prevented me from doing it before now and I passed up on going into a few contests because of my procrastinating ways....I love taking photo's and entering contests allows one to focus energies into going out and shooting pics (as does blogging.) As well it's great to see all the wonderful photo's, great locations, groups and get some feedback. I don't have photoshop (been planning to but cost has delayed it) but I have been muddling along with GIMP (a free photo and graphics program).

So to try out everything, I entered a contest at TRUTH for photo's and decided to also feature Truth's fashions, Hair etc. So it's all the Truth here today......Truth is known for lovely hair, Clothes and Shoes, Skins and Tattoos. (Let's see how many Truths I can utter today....not to mention going crazy with links!) I discovered a couple of really cool places for taking pictures , Inspire Natural Space Park, in Shinda and La Reve.







I want to say also that my pictures are not THAT good. Entering contests and joining Flickr are ways of improving and learning, if you belong to Flickr, or just look now and then, you will know what I mean. Some of the work there is pretty amazing.

Week - 9, A loft, A Muse and too much Snow!!

"It's only November!" I whine, pensively peering through the panes of glass
in my bedroom at the literally piles of snow outside.

Is it any wonder then that I have been hanging out in my NY loft taking pictures,
jumping into my Edie shape and daydreaming about the Artist's life?
(The one none of us actually have but dream about in between juggling kids, animals,
laundry and work.) Edie was one of my first shapes and she was inspired by Warhol's muse
Edie Sedgewick. I haven't worn this shape for a while and found I needed to make some adjustments.

My Loft is New and I bought it to replace a very simple Skybox that I somehow mistextured until it just looked wrong.... It gives a great view of NY and has sunlight shining through big panes of glass. And has a few pop art touches... I also bought some cool furniture like a beanbag chair, Car Chair and table. The chairs are re-texturable...but the store (Modern Essentials) was closing so I'm not sure if it's still available (Modern Essentials has re-opened in a new sim, everything is 25L so well worth a look).

I also found myself looking for 60's dresses to match the look and the new Moon skin from
Redgrave which is a perfect 60's face, with lots of black around the eyes. One of the hardest looks to acheive is one from the 60's as not many stores specialize in the type of simple straight minidress needed. Anothe weird place I ended up was Tribute Island, memorial park, which has odd little memorials to dead famous people. I found one of Warhols Memorials and had fun snapping that.
So pull up a chair, put on some Bob Dylan and slip into a time that most of those who lived it can't rightly recall.....The 60's!!

Week 8 - Reality Bites!!!

Ok, so by now we all know about the Blogger Challenge posed by Kristi Maurer
the one where we appear as ourselves.... well, I've been wanting to try this for a while but
never thought I'd be posting it to my blog. Why? I am the most unphotogenic person on the planet.
I hate pictures of myself. Anyway I included one picture that looks pretty good but is pretty old,
so I ended up doing what all the artists do when drawing themselves, I used a mirror.
I tried to be as honest as possible, adding in the extra years and pounds!

The results were ...interesting! My kids said that I was pretty close and I found the same challenge as I always do when dressing for a look, the right skin, clothes and especially hair are vitally important and I did the best I could with what I had on hand.

Well I'm getting behind in my Blogs... Truthfully if Vanitas and Qwynne would hold up their end I would be all caught up. Last week they were not to be found! I tried calling IM'ing and kept getting the "away" signal. When I finally caught up with them the two lazibirds were swimming, suntanning and getting very chummy with each other at the SL Botanical Gardens (still wearing their clothing...). If it wasn't so funny I would have been hopping mad!!! Anyway to make a long story short I sent the two of them over to Reaction to get some cool threads so they would at least look good while doing nothing......

Week 7 - This is silly!

Week 7 - Octobers End - Halloween, Shelby

Now that October has come to an end, and the parties, hunts, freebies, shows relating to All-Hallows-Eve and Samhain are over what do we have to look forward to........?

Winter and (I won't use the C or X word..) and more hunts, shows, parties and general mayhem leading to that day I can't bring myself to name right now! Actually if last year was any indication, I had better steel myself for an orgy of Freebies, Advent gifts Etc. It's a lot of fun but I think I'll let Vanitas and Qwynne take on those jobs while I enjoy skating, skiing and decorating my home for the holidays.

This Halloween I took a little time to come up with a Costume. After I went to the Costume Fair, I really wanted to avoid the "Sexy Witch" look or the "random, I couldn't think of anything" look.
I found a nice Rusty Steampunk dress and paired it up with an "Automaton" skin which matches really well to make a Steampunk Robot/Doll look. The skin is expensive but comes with various colour options which makes it quite versatile. The other look I came up with was one I had been trying to find but wasn't successful till I went on the Bare Rose hunt. I found it in the store afterwards and also a lot of other reasonably priced fantasy clothes. This is a Jester/Mime outfit with a bit of an Anime/Manga Slant that I find very attractive. If you want some really cool Manga Style clothing at a very low price this is the place to go.

I ended the night at a very "far out" Halloween party at Farhaven. Get a bunch of crazy Elves together for a party and you never know who'll show up...A carrot Avie, Thor, a big purple Duck,
A Barrel Lady, A lady Tree, more than a few Sexy Witches, and a whole lot of Ghoulishness with a few monsters (and Elves) thrown in for good measure.

Politics, Protest and, SOS Week 6

Feeling a little deflated and sad.... I feel bad about the whole situation going on right now.
A lot of people are going to be hurt by the draconian measures taken and upcoming. I guess I'm still hoping that some compromise will be reached before all the creative energy leaves SL.

Shelby in Harajukubox City, and Neko stuff...Week 6

I have always been a big fan of the Japanese sims. I love the overall design, immersive feel (ie. like you are there.. in a real place) as well I love the different way that Japanese Designers see fashion, and reflect culture and influence this world and the RL world. Neko fashion is unusual because it really doesn't have any counterpart in the real world. It is something of a SL phenomenon stemming from Manga and Anime colliding with streetwear and an urban punk sensibility.
I have always resisted its charms mainly because it is so accessory driven and needs all the right elements to make it work. Today I decided to show you the look I came up with before touring Harajukubox City, a Japanese Neko and Streetwear Shopping Sim. Items came from various old and new Items from my inventory.

This Sim has everything for your little Neko; Accessories, Boots (or feet), Tails, Hair, Skins, clothes and there was quite a variety for the male Neko as well. I bought a hair from Androgeny which I was able to tint slightly to match the Kitty parts I had bought from the Sn@tch sale which is going on right now. Stores in HC include; Little Heaven, Kyoot, Electro Kitty, Androgeny, Canimal, Eat Rice and Neko Gear. There are also some Anime and Japanese Schoolgirl looks in Edelweiss and some of the other shops which are in the area.

Shelby Rasmuson introduces, Vanitas and Qwynne - Week 5!

After spending a great deal of time standing at camp chairs with the letter 'Q' and 'V' always showing up, I decided to bring two new characters into my SL life.

Meet Qwynne MacMoragh... a native of Qwghlm with interests in Natural Philosophy, Alchemy and a penchant for trouble. He is very much different than myself as he's not really interested in shopping, Camp chairs or fantasy. He's something of a tough guy and needs to find his own way
(believe me he can be stubborn!) He already caused a ruckus at the HOH camp chairs because amid all the camp chairs, lag and craziness, 'Q' kept coming up and he got a few mens (and not sure how that happened..) ladies hairs before he ducked for cover under a cloud of embarassment. Thanks to Silent Sparrow's newbie box and Minnue Model Skins (Halloween box) he now looks manly enough for his liking. The skin especially is wonderful and he really likes the close shaven hair and stubbly look. Qwynne will be useful as he has no problem hanging with ruffians, walking down dark alleys or dealing with people of a generally low character.

I also want to introduce you to Vanitas Mistwallow, a girl with a budget and Gothic preferences. Her background is something of a mystery to me but I'm told she is not to be trusted.....
I have to admit it, I have become bored with all the freebies, hunts and camp chairs. (I have too much stuff in my inventory!!) Vanitas is looking forward to filling in for me whenever she can so that I can get back to Socializing, exploring and learning to build. (like that will ever happen.)
Vanitas was able to put together a look from stuff she found at Fleur, LVS& Co. and Tesla. All cheap or free. She also had a great time hunting around the Retrology Sim to the sounds of Rockabilly music for leetle pumpkins which contained gifts and tricks!

I spent the week kicking back by my cottage, giving advice and landmarks where needed
to the two newbies.

Camp chairs, hunts and general mayham...Week 4

This has been a week of unaccomplished tasks. Things I wanted to do didn't get done. Unplanned shopping trips, and lack of patience with the camp chairs meant I wasn't one of the hundreds of Avies by now wearing the dress from Evie's closet. Ivalde had a great sale though with lots of deals on black dresses, I bought a few and promptly lost a skirt from one of them, from my inventory
while taking photo's. (something script related I think...) And there was a great hunt but I forgot the name of it! Most hunts end up with getting a lot of cute but never worn items that get purged from my inventory months later.

Week 3 - We're off to see the Wizard !!

The Magic of Oz is a new sim based on one of my favorite Children's stories (by Frank Baum) and Classic Movies.




This sim has shopping and is also a beautiful recreation of the places in the story. Here you will find the Emerald City, Munchkinland, the Witches Castle and even the flying Monkeys!

My latest incarnation has me exploring the wild places of SL as a faun.
